Once people lived in the dark and were in fear of being eaten by the Taniwha.

Tamarereti was a warrior who decided to go fishing in his waka on lake Taupo one morning.

Tamarereti fell asleep and when he awoke he found his waka had been pushed to the far side of the lake by the wind.

Tamarereti was very hungry so he cooked his fish he also noticed pebbles glistening and he had an idea.

Tamarereti's idea was to collect the pebbles and throw them into the sky to guide him home and scare the Taniwha away.

Tamarereti got home and went to sleep, when he awoke Ranganui (the god of the sky) had come to see him. Tamarereti was afraid he would be angry with him.

Ranganui was very pleased he said " Thankyou for lighting up the night sky and making the land safe from the Taniwha. To honor you we will raise your waka into the sky for people to remember what you have done" ( people called this the milky way)
