Elements of Art

Line, Color, shape, value, form, texture, space

Space:
An element of art by which positive and negative areas are
defined or a sense of depth achieved in a work of art .

Negative Space:
The empty areas around objects (2-D or 3-D). In this still from Hong Kong, the negative space is the sky.

Positive Space:
The physical objects (either 2-d or 3-d). In this Painting, "the Starry Night" by Van gogh, the positive space is the town and mountains.

Alexander Calder created mobiles that moved through space.

Andy Goldsworthy uses only natural materials, in this case icicles, to transform spaces in nature.

Shepard Fairey uses graffiti art to transform urban spaces. he also plays with our perception of positive and negative space by using black and white for both positive and negative space in his murals.

Op art creates interesting illusions of space.

look at the negative space around the pittsburgh zoo logo in the next slide. What animals do you see around the tree?

The graphic designer of this logo played with the negative space to create images of a gorilla, a lioness, and fish jumping in water.

The next image of street art (made with chalk!) uses perspective to create the illusion of space.
