PRESENTATION OUTLINE

FORCES IN FLUIDS

PRESSURE IN FLUIDS

  • Fluid Pressure depends on depth
  • Greater the depth, the greater the pressure
  • Fluids include liquids and gases: they take the shape of their containers and will flow
  • Fluids flow from high pressure to low pressure area
  • Formula: pressure = force divided by area

DENSITY AND BUOYANCY

  • Density is the ratio of mass to volume in a given substance
  • Formula: Density = Mass over Volume
  • Sinking: an object will sink if it is more dense than the fluid if it is in OR of it has greater weight than the buoyant force
  • Floating: an object will float if it is less dense than the fluid it is in OR is equal to the buoyant force

ARCHIMEDE'S PRINCIPLE

  • Displace: to take the place of
  • Principle: buoyant force on an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces
