TUNISIA'S REVOLUTION

  • There were many things to start the revolution
  • The last straw was when a citizen, Muhamed, killed himself
  • He started the next level of protests against the government in Tunis
  • The protests forced the President Ben Ali out of office
  • Ben took refuge in Saudi Arabia

WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW?

  • In early 2011 the prime minister Ben Ali fled the country
  • After he fled the citizens began pushing for democracy
  • Later that year the government changed to a form of democracy
  • They have a president named Moncef Marzouki
  • He is not liked by all the citizens but they are pleased that he was elected

PROBLEMS

  • The country is facing challenges of finding the right type of democracy
  • It will take time to get the government to find a balance

INVOLVEMENT WITH OTHER COUNTRIES

  • Tunisia's former president fled Ben Ali to Saudi Aribia
  • Other Arab countries thought they could follow Tunisia to democracy
  • The U.S. sent 350 million dollars to get the government started
  • They sent money because the U.S. wants more democratic countries

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • The country had a revolution
  • The people protested against the government because it wasn't fair
  • The citizens overthrew it which forced them to make a democracy
  • After the other Arab countries saw what they did they followed
