STEP ONE
Turn on scale. Make sure scale is balanced (press zero if not) then place crucible + lid onto it to find the mass.

STEP TWO
FIND THE MASS OF CRUCIBLE + LID AND HYDRATE (28.77G)
After finding the mass of the crucible + lid either you or your teacher should add a tea spoon of the hydrate (epsom salt) into the crucible.

STEP THREE
FIND THE MASS OF THE HYDRATE.
In order to find the mass of the hydrate you must take the mass of crucible + lid w/ the hydrate and subtract the mass of crucible + lid.
28.77g - 26.11g = 2.66g

STEP FOUR
HEAT HYDRATE FOR 14 MINUTES
Have your teacher ignite the fire before you begin to heat the hydrate. Leave the lid of the crucible slightly ajar. Heat hydrate on a low fire for four minutes. When the four minutes is up heat hydrate on a higher fire for ten minutes.

STEP FIVE
ALLOW HYDRATE COOL FOR ATLEAST 5 MINUTES
After heating the hydrate for 14 minutes allow it to cool for atleast five minutes. Place it on a steel ____. DO NOT TOUCH IT!
