They became popular because they came at the right time. Since they came after WW2, there was a huge fan base which were the baby bloomers. This helped them to gain in popularity.

The British Invasion occurred in the mid-'60s, when a wave of English rock & roll bands crossed over into the American market after the breakthrough success of the Beatles. The Beatles aired on the Ed Sullivan show. This helped them gain influence among the masses.
