JOSEPH STALIN
DICTATOR OF THE SOVIET UNION
BEGINNINGS
- Was born on December 18, 1879
- His original name was Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, Stalin means "steel"
- He ended up joining an organization supporting Georgian freedom from Russian rule
- He was exiled to Serbia, but made his way back into Russia illegally
- In October of 1917, the Bolsheviks were in full control of the government
PARTY POLITICS
- Members were vying for power after taking control
- Stalin was a general secretary but he made many people owe their power to him
- When they noticed what was happening, Lenin was already on his deathbed
- He had many people removed from power and sometimes exiled
- He got so paranoid, he started taking leaders in the night and executing them
INTO THE 30S
- Stalin seized land from peasants and organized collective farms
- He also set into motion rapid industrialization, at the cost of the environment
- Millions died from the famine that ensued, and millions more to factory work
- In addition, anyone who resisted was taken to labor camps, where even more people died
- For every Jew that died in a concentration camp, one and a half Russians died in labor camps
WW2
- Stalin was originally convinced of Hitler's integrity, until he attacked
- The purges of the 30s made the Soviet army unable to function properly
- Stalin requested that the Allies make another front to help protect them
- They refused intially, and millions of Russians died
- When the Allies started to win, they set up the second front
LEGACY
- His health began to falter in the early 50s
- An assassination plot was discovered...
- But before he could order another purge, he died
- His successor denounced him, but he still....
- Managed to gain popularity among young people
