The ability to control the behavior of others.

Coercion: power by force

POWER ACCEPTED AS LEGIT BY THOSE SUBJECT TO IT.

FORMS OF AUTHORITY

  • Charismatic: arises from personality of leader
  • Traditional: legitimacy of leader rooted in custom
  • Rational-legal: power of govt officials based on offices held

TOTALITARIAN CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Single polital party, controlled by 1
  • Well-coordinated campaign of terror
  • Total control over communication means
  • Monopoly over military
  • Planned economy directed by state

Authoritarian:
In between democracy/totalitarian.
Ruled by leaders, but are permitted some freedoms.
Ex. Some monarchies
