  • Capital- Kiev
  • Religion- Orthodox Christianity
  • Language- Russian & Ukrainian

Early History

  • Likely location of horse domestication
  • Oldest settlements- 32,000 years old
  • Greek colonies around 500 BC
  • Goths around 400 AD
  • Wars between Huns/Goths 500 AD

Medieval Ukraine

  • 6th Century- Bulgarians
  • 7th Century- Khazars
  • 8th Century- Kievan Rus
  • VIKINGS!!!!!!

Kievan Rus

  • Largest nation in Europe
  • Converted to Christianity in 988
  • Greatest leader- Grand Prince Vladimir

Mongols

  • By the 1300s- civil war
  • Conquered by Mongols
  • So was most of Asia

Early Modern

  • Plague came to Europe from Ukraine
  • By 1400s, ruled by Poland-Lithuania
  • People moved there from all over
  • Cossacks- fierce fighters

First "Ukraine"

  • 1648- Cossack Hetmanate
  • First "Ukrainian" state
  • Allied with Russia against Poland
  • This would not end well...

Russian Control of the East

  • By 1800, completely under Russian rule
  • Ukrainian writers tried to preserve language
  • Russians tried to eliminate it
  • Many Ukrainians rose to fame & power

Austrian Control of the West

  • Austrians brought in their own rulers
  • Most Ukrainians were peasants
  • People fled to the west from Russia
  • Ukrainian language not banned

Modern Times

  • After WWI, Ukraine got independence
  • Joined the Soviet Union (USSR)
  • Soviet leaders caused big famine
  • Lots of WWII battles fought there

Independence Again

  • 1991- USSR breaks up
  • Ukrainians declare independence
  • Country tries to balance east & west

So What's Happening Now?

  • Pres Yanukovych doesn't sign agreement with EU
  • He preferred to be closer to Russia
  • Many in Kiev were upset
  • Protested in the Maidan (central square)

So What's Happening Now?

  • Violence escalted
  • 2-2014- protesters killed
  • Yanukovych left Kiev
  • Parliament overthrew him

Russia Acts

  • They wanted Ukraine allied with them
  • After Yanukovych left, they invaded Crimea
  • People vote to join Russia
  • Referendum declared invalid by the UN

Eastern Ukraine

  • Russia also sent "stealth" troops in
  • They supported pro-Russian separatists
  • These groups shot down a Malaysian plane
