Who?

  • Large number of African Americans
  • Called by Louis Farrakhan (leader of the religious group Nation of Islam)
  • National African American Leadership Summit + local chapters of NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) = Million Man March Organizing Committee

What?

  • One of the modern events in the Civil Rights Movement.
  • A march promoting unity and atonement of African American males through various inspirational speeches given.
  • Nearly 1.1 million participants = one of the largest gatherings of its time.

When/Where?

  • Took place in Washington D.C., our nation's captiol
  • Took place on October 16, 1995

Purpose

  • Political demonstration to depict a different picture of African American males.
  • Instill a sense of responsibility in African American males to improve treatment of the race.
  • Serve as a sort of spiritual renewal.

Notable Speakers
