FOLK CULTURE: NORIGAE

  • Origins of the norigae is a protective charm for shamanism
  • The norigae became popular in Korea during the Joseon dynasty.
  • It is a chest or waist ornament, purely artistic and having little practical value.
  • Its artistic beauty was well liked by women of all classes and diffused to the entire kingdom.
  • The larger, colorful, and decorated the norigae equaled a higher social ranking.
