FUNCTION: Eliminate waste

3 TYPES OF WASTE

  • Ammonia
  • Most toxic
  • Requires lots of water to flush away
  • Fish and amphibians

3 TYPES OF WASTE

  • Urea
  • Mammals
  • Less toxic
  • Requires metabolic energy to create

3 TYPES OF WASTE

  • Uric acid
  • Reptiles and birds
  • Requires very little water
  • Very non-toxic

FILTRATION

  • Glomerulus
  • RBC and proteins don't pass thru
  • Driven by hydrostatic pressure

REABSORPTION

  • Necessary filtrate absorbed back into blood
  • Active transport
  • In nephron and tubule

SECRETION

  • Transports solutes into renal tubule to make urine
  • Eliminates faster than filtration

EXCRETION

  • Removal of metabolic waste

KIDNEY STONE

  • Calcium deposit in nephron
  • Painful to pass
  • Sharp pain
  • Bloody urine

PREVALENCE AND TREATMENT

  • Surgery
  • Taking lots of fluids
  • Passing stones
  • 13% in men
  • 7% in women

NEPHROSIS

PREVALENCE AND TREATMENT

  • 1 in 5000 experience nephrosis
  • Variety of causes
  • Change in diet
