meet mary alice,joey, and grandma 
Mary Alice is a 9 year old girl in the beginning, and over the years ,she has gotten older and braver. She's chopped off a fish's head and didn't flinch. She also danced at the talent show.

Joey is a 12 year old boy in the beginning, and over the years he has spent with grandma he's learned to do many more things that he wouldn't have known. He has learned to drive a car and fish in an illegal way.

Grandma is around 75 years old in the beginning. Over the years she's had Mary Alice and Joey, she has learned to trust a few more people and have more fun.

plot

In "a long way from chicago",the author Richard Peck tells a story about Joey and Mary Alice going to grandma Dowdel's house. They face many adventures together with their grandma. The writer does a good job explaining how people lived during the great depression. They celebrate 100 years of greatness during the centennial celebration, they witness the hardships of the 1920's, and face the sheer lies of grandma Dowdel, they also they cheated for greatness at the fair.

Summary

Mary Alice and Joey go to visit Grandma Dowdel in the summer.
Every year they go on some kind of adventure like going to the town fair and stealing the sheriff's boat with Grandma Dowdel. As the years go by Mary Alice and Joey get used to and understand Grandma Dowdels ways.
