How to become Master of a Guild

STEPS INVOLVED

  • Apprentice: Parents payed a master for training, and lived with the master. Trained for 2-7 years, and could not marry during this time
  • Journeyman: Worked for the master and earned a salary. Needs to create a masterpiece to become a master
  • Master: Owned his own shop. Worked with other masters to protect their trade, and sometimes even served in civic government

WHY WAS MEMBERSHIP IMPORTANT

  • Membership was important because it was a lot easier to sell you services and good. Guilds also usually built monopolies on the local markets
  • If you weren't in the guild however the guild would go after you and try and make sure you never sold anything

TYPES OF GUILDS

  • Merchant guilds: An association of merchants and workers created to protect their rights to trade and help out members and their families
  • Craft guilds: Association of skilled workers that set standards for working conditions. Established prices, wages, and employment

  • Benefits for you friends and family if you were in a guild included being taken care of if something would of happened to you and possible lower prices

MODERN DAY EXAMPLE

  • The most obvious modern day example is the electrician
  • They go through the same steps as guilds: Apprentice, Journeymen, and master
