The Running of the Bulls,or El encierro,is a 8 day fiesta which takes place in Pamplona,Spain from July 6 to 14.During the event, brave men wearing a white shirt, white pants and red scarves run with from a Herd of angry bulls.
They start from outside of the city and end in the Bullrings inside the city.
The event is to honor Saint Fermin, who was martyred by being gored by bulls.
Although it has a religious meaning, the encierro began as a tactic to move the bulls to the bullring faster.Eventually, the herders became so good at it that they started to compete with each other. To win,you must move your herd to the ring the fastest without being overtaken. This became a tradition known as the running of the Bulls.
Although running among beasts like bulls may sound fun,it is also quite dangerous.Runners risk the chance of being gored by a bull running at them at full speed.they also risk being trampled,or suffocated due to the large pileup at the entrance of the bullring.
There are around 50 to 100 injuries each year, about half of them being serious.
The day before the first run,the runners stand before a statue of Saint Fermin and say a prayer of guidance.
At 8 A.M.,a rocket is set off to alert the runners that the corral is opening.A second rocket signals that all of the Bulls have been released. The third and fourth rocket are set off when all the Bulls are in the corral, marking the end of the event.
The total length of the run is 875 meters. The average time is 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)protest the event almost every year, finding it a cruelty to the bulls. In 2010,members of the British and Spanish sects of PETA gathered in Pamplona. They would go on to strip naked and pour fake blood onto themselves.
