Question: What major events were going on in 1959 Nigeria verses 1880 Nigeria?

Context: Historical and Political

Claim: In 1880 Nigeria lost their freedom from Britain. In 1959 and 1960 the Nigerian people gained freedom back. Things Fall Apart was explaining the differences between times.

1880'S NIGERIA

  • 1851 Bristish started trading for palm oil in Lagos
  • 1861 Britian made Lagos a colony
  • British took control and spread throughout Nigeria
  • Population grew
  • Nigerian people forced to move from ancestors and culture

1950'S-1960'S NIGERIA

  • 1951 Britian agreed to share power with Nigerian politicians
  • After 1957 new constitutions allowed representative governments
  • 1959 North became self-governing
  • New president Dr. Aziwe and prime minister Alhaji Abuaker
  • 1960 Nigeria gained full freedom
