THE CELL

THE NUCLEUS

• The Nucleus resembles a multilayered ball
• It is considered to be the "Control Center" of the cell
• It stores the DNA in the cell, is used to create protein
• and carry outs other cell procedures

THE MITOCHONDRIA

• The Mitochondria is the " Power House" in the cell
• It looks like a bean, and releases the energy stored in food
• molecules. This is called cellular respiration.

GOLGI APPARATUS

• Sometimes called the Golgi Body, this organelle is what puts
• the finishing touches on proteins and liquids coming from
• The smooth and rough Endoplasmic Reticulums. It also creates
• Lysosomes. It is a small, folded membrane, similar in appearance
• To the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum.

VACUOLE

• The Vacuole is a large, balloon shaped storage basin. It
• is larger in plant cells. It essentially functions as a garbage bag
• In the cell, collecting waste that may be harmful to the cell.

LYSOSOMES

• The Lysosomes are small membranous sacs of digestive
• enzymes. They digest food, invaders, and old organelles
• inside the cell.

RIBOSOMES

• The Ribosomes are small, almost dots, that are found
• on the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, the nuclear envelope,
• and floating freely in the cytoplasm. They pair up to create protein
• and need RNA, the "recipe" for protein.

CELL MEMBRANE

• The Cell Membrane is double layered, and surrounds
• the cell. It isolates the cell from the environment around it,
• and protects it from foreign particles that could do the cell
• harm.

CYTOPLASM

• The Cytoplasm is like the filler of the cell.
• It is made of a jelly like substance that is 80% water
• and usually clear. Many of the cells activities take place in
• in the cytoplasm because it takes up so much space.

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

• There are 2 different Endoplasmic Reticulums: the smooth
• and rough. The are almost identical in appearance, with the rough
• containing ribosomes. They are both membranous folds, and the RER
• Surrounds the nucleus, while the SER surrounds the RER. The RER synthesizes
• proteins, while the SER synthesizes fat and lipids, and detoxifies drugs and alcohol.

CHLOROPLASTS

• Chloroplasts are organelles that appear only in plant cells.
• They carry out photosynthesis, which is used to produce energy
• for the cell by using sunlight. The are very active, and float
• around the cell and reproduce. They look similar to mitochondria.
