  • *oil becomes a huge franchise
  • *Texas has many oil wells; very profitable
  • *Texas oil rush, many people come
  • Bermont's (home of the first Texas oil rig) population grew from 10,000-50,000 in months because of oil rush

rights

  • Child labor is often used in feilds
  • Several women's rights movements occured these mostly involved work rights and wanting to be equal to men
  • children's rights movements occurred as well, these were about children not wanting to be forced to work
  • Blacks and Latinos enslaved

poverty

  • *even though people make money on oil some people are very poor
  • *Many rural areas have no electricity
  • *5,000 people died in World War 1
  • *Hastily constructed oil facilities often leaked and polluted nearby land

fighting to improve

  • *Women fought for the right to work
  • *alcohol sales banned in many counties; this was supposed to decrease the crime rate.
  • *Tejanos fight for better education for their children
  • *child labor laws passed

companies

  • *Many early, small companies are still important
  • *people came to drill wells, lay pipes, and work in refiners
  • *first well was expected to produce 5 barrels per day, it produced over 100,000

this was an age of rights, women, lots of oil, and forward thinking people making a difference!
