  • ALS ( Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a disease that attacks the nerves that control muscles
  • People slowly lose the ability to speak, move, eat, and breathe
  • 100% of people with ALS die because of it

  • 5,000 people a year get diagnosed with ALS in the US
  • 16,000 people are living with ALS at any given time

WHY ALS IS NEWSWORTHY

  • ALS can happen to anybody
  • Most of the time it is not inherited
  • At this time, there is no known cure
  • If more people knew about ALS, more money could be donated to cure research

ECONOMIC LENS

  • People with ALS need a lot of medical care and equipment
  • See multiple doctors, take special medications, and some require surgery
  • All this costs a lot of money from families and insurance companies

  • Most cultures expect younger people to care for older family members
  • This means that family members take on the role of caregiver for both their parents and their own children at the same time

Stephen Hawking and Lou Gehrig.

ALS is also known sometimes as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
