Titanic Quarter can trace its history back to 1839 when the Ballast Board employed the engineer William Dargan to excavate a 'cut' into the land. Thus, the land on which Titanic quarter is situated was created. The waste from the excavation of the first cut was dumped by Dargan’s team on the east side to form the 17-acre Queens Island. On it was the Belfast Crystal Palace, a tourist attraction, though it was destroyed in a fire less than a year after construction.
