WHAT ARE THE ANDES?

  • The Andes are a mountain range that runs across Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and chile, on the west coast of South America
  • The mountains reach to be over 13,000 feet above sea level
  • The range stretches 4,500 feet from north To south
  • Some birds that live in the area are the condor, flamingo, and the hillstar hummingbird
  • Some animals that live here are the mountain lion and llama

WHAT ARE NATURAL DISASTERS THAT OCCUR?

  • Earthquakes
  • Volcanic activity
  • Tsunamis
  • Droughts
  • Landslides
  • Flooding
  • Frost
  • Avalanches

WHY DO THEY OCCUR?

  • First of all, the Andes are located on the edge of the ring of fire, or pacific plate. This makes many small earthquakes to occur, And even some small volcanic activity.
  • Second, the climate is not the same in all parts of the mountains, so some areas could be in the middle of a drought while another part could be in a frost.
  • Third, Gravity is always on the mountains, of course. But it sometimes causes landslides and avalanches.

WHAT ARE SOME NOTABLE OCCURRENCES?

  • In 1962, a piece of a glacier broke off and slid down the mountain, killing over 4,000
  • In 1970, a killer quake struck north Peru and killed over 70,000
  • In 2010, various mudslides and flood waters ruined homes, covered roads, and 20 were killed
  • Following a 8.4 quake in 2001, a tsunami hit south Peru and claimed about 26 lives
  • In 1600, the volcano Huaynaputina erupted and killed over 1,500 people

REFLECTION

  • I think that the Andes are a dangerous place for natural disasters to occur. If the government of Peru and society work together, maybe a way to stop the natural disasters will come up.
