VOCAB

  • Silla Dynasty- under Silla korea prospered and the arts flourished.
  • Capital of Silla is Kyongju, which was remodled on the Tang Capita at Chang'an.
  • Koryo Dynasty-Korean dynasty that ruled from 935 -1392.modern word korea is derived from koryo.
  • Celadon- porcelain made in Korea with an unusual blue-green glaze
  • choson (YO) Dynasty- Korean dynasty that ruled from 1392 to 1910, the longest-lived of the three dynasties

  • Has three diff dynasties; Silla, Koryo, and Choson
  • Created the alphabet

SILLA

  • Korea prospered and the arts flourished
  • Buddhism was a religion in the Silla dynasty and 100 temples built
  • Most of the cultural & technical flowering centerd at the capital
  • Capital of Silla - Kyongjau
  • In 682 Silla set up a national Confucian academy to train high officials

SILLA

  • Instituded a civil service examination
  • In Korea, only aristocrats were permitted to take the test
  • Later on conflicts b/w peasents and the aristocrats led to overthrow of dynasty
  • Kyongju(silla capital) was reownedas the "city of gold",where aristocracy pursued a life of high culture

KORYON

  • Replaced Silla in 918
  • New capital established at Songak
  • Based on Chinese inventions they took a step further and created movable
  • (continue)metal type to print large numbers of books.
  • Improved many Chinese inventions

  • They learned to make porcelain from China.
  • Then, they perfected the technique for making celadon
  • created movable metal type to print large number of books
  • vases and jars were also prized possesions

CHOSON

  • Last and longest lived of the three empires
  • General Yi reduced Buddhist influence & set up a government based upon Confucianism
  • Choson dynasty was set up by Korean general Yi Song-gye
  • In 1592 Korea suffered an invasion from Japan.
  • Although Chinese troops helped repel the invaders, the country was devastated.

CHOSON

  • General Yi established close relationships with the neighbouring Ming dynasty (1368–1644)
  • which considered Korea a client state, and Chinese cultural influences were strong during this period.
