PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE PURITANS

The Puritans were just like the Pilgrims

They believed that the Church of England did not go far enough int heir reform

They set sail for America in 1630

Unlike the pilgrims, the puritans stayed with the church

The bishops lived like princes

They found comfort in the bible, thinking they were reliving Exodus

Thought they were picked by God to fulfill a special roll

If they did their duties they thought they would be blessed

But if they failed they thought they would be punished

They got to worship God freely and at any time

SALEM WITCH TRIALS

Started on January of 1692

Daughter and a niece of a reverend fell sick and when they didn't get better they were diagnosed with bewitchment

19 men and woman were hanged

One person was crushed to death and many more died in prison

Witches were accused of making deals with the devil

Witchcraft was punishable by death because it was ungodly

In some cases, people would call out people even if they didn't do anything

This is just so they wouldn't get punished

In some cases, if you confess they believed you could be saved and won't kill you

Even though many died the puritans acted like it never happened

ARTHUR MILLER

There are several reasons to why Arthur Miller wrote the crucible

One was to secure his career as a journalist

Another is to secure his career as a play writer

Another is to inform the people of The US

The government misinformation and propaganda

He used the Salem Witch Trials as a precinct

He also choose to do the Salem Witch trials because of the red scare

The government and other citizens were accusing others of being a communist

Miller was questioned and threatened in the court about being a communist

So he based some of the story on real life experiences
