BATTLE OF MARATHON

The battle is now more famous for the Greek messenger Phidippides who ran 140 miles in two days to Sparta for help before the battle became the inspiration for the 1896 Athens Olympics.

Phidippides was going to save his city but was out of luck when Sparta said they wouldn't help Athens in the battle.

The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC between the Greeks and Persian Empire

• 7ships destroyed 4,000–5,000 PERSIANS DEAD
• 9,000–10,000 Athenians, 1,000 Plataeans
• 25,000 infantry and 1,000 cavalry (Greeks)

THE ATHENIANS WON THE BATTLE, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARMY WAS MUCH SMALLER THEN THE PERSIANS
