  • Majoritarianism: It is belief that majority community should be able to rule a country in which ever way they want, by disregarding the needs of the minority.
  • Federalism: Federalism refers to the mixed or compound mode of government, combining a general government with regional governments in a single political system

Majoritarianism IN SRI LANKA

  • Sri Lanka became an independent country in 1948.
  • Because of their sinhalese majority , they took over the country.
  • Disregarding the Tamil , an act was passed in 1956' Sinhala as the official Language
  • Everything favoured the Sinhalese people

RISE OF THE CIVIL WAR

  • By 1980s many political organisations were formed demanding an independent Tamil Eelam.
  • The distrust between the two communities turned into a civil war.
  • This a setback social, economic , cultural life of the country.
  • Thousands of people died in Sri Lanka and even in India too.

  • Lots of communities clashed together in the 1960s
  • So the government sought for a solution
  • They came up with power sharing
  • From the 1970 to 1993, series of amendments occurred
  • This led to the formation of Federalism

  • To avoid conflicts, violence
  • To avoid civil war
  • To avoid disintegration
  • To avoid political instability
  • It undermines the unity of the nation
