PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Spiritual Warfare

Orientation to Missions

Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever.
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord,
and you are exalted as head above all.
Both riches and honor come from you,
and you rule over all.
In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.
And now we thank you, our God,
and praise your glorious name.
1 Chronicles 29:10-13

God has the power over all things and controls all things.
Some aspects of theology are very black and white because they are set out specifically in the Word. Spiritual warfare is a lot of grey in the areas we will be discussing today. In everything though, its important to keep in mind that all the authority and power is His, and He rules over all. Even though Satan is the king of this age, God is still sovereignly ruling.

Spiritual Warfare

Orientation to Missions

There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.

C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

What are some of the different views on Spiritual Warfare?

Animism

a. The belief that spiritual forces and spirits animate the universe and determine most earthly and heavenly events and that these can be influenced or appeased by magical acts, incantations, ritual activity, or avoidance of objects and activities that are taboo

How would a previous belief in Animism affect a new believer?

God, Human Beings, and angels (good and Bad)

A spiritual warfare orientation toward missions includes and understanding that the chief factors involved in the spreading of the Christian faith are spiritual in nature. God, human beings, and angels (good and evil) are in conflict with one another. p.189

Binding Satan

A process of stopping Satan or demonic opposition to the spread and receptivity of the gospel by identifying the demons in control of an individual, group or area and commanding them to stop interfering with God's purposes
(Matt. 12:22-29)

What are the potential pitfalls of this practice?

(Matt. 12:22-29)

John 1:5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Closure Strategy

a. An orientation toward finishing the task of the great commission, a situation in which a biblically sound, culturally relevant and growing body of Christians is found in every people group on earth, and all have heard the gospel

What does this belief imply about one's theology?

Identificational Repentance

a. When a representative group represents on behalf of a larger group, with an emphasis on corporate repentance for corporate sins

Is this necessary or even beneficial?

Prayer Walks

a. The practice of going to areas resistant to the gospel and walking in prayer for the people and against whatever forces may be opposed to the gospel. Prayer walks usually are also worship centered.

Have you participated in this? How did you find it to be beneficial?

Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare

a. Describes confrontation with high-ranking principalities and powers such as Paul writes about in Ephesians 6:12. These forces are frequently called ‘territorial spirits’ because they attempt to keep large numbers of humans networked through cities, nations, neighborhoods, people groups, or any other form of human society in spiritual captivity – (Wagner 1996, 22)

Have You been a part of this? What has this experience taught you?

The answer to prayer may take time, maybe because the powers are blocking God's response. But when we fail to pray, God's hands are tied.

I would appeal to those advocating strategic-level spiritual warfare to be wise and to recognize that it is through his Word that God speaks and acts, judges and saves. There are no powers that can stop the progress of the gospel (Matt. 28:18)

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Matthew 28:18

Territorial Spirits

a. Demonic beings said to control geographic areas or groups of people. These spirits limit the ability of people in the group or area to respond to the gospel. Advocates claim as a basis the events depicted in Daniel 10:10-20

How will this affect evangelism and missions if taken seriously?

Third Wave

a. Evangelicals who embraced the ongoing nature of the gifts of the Spirit without agreeing to the Pentecostal or charismatic position on the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It was often associated with the signs and wonders movement.

Matt. 12:22-29

Expect Opposition
but Fear no evil

Chivis, Normal happy girl, mother would talk to ghosts, including her deceased grandmother.
Ruben, gymnastics coach, good catholic. Saw things move around him that had no reason to.
Manuel, grew up in Sunday School with me. Midnight calls for odd behavior. Possessed and exorcised more than once. Extra-physical strength. Stronger than six full-grown men.
Man in church who was always angry, upset, tired. Accepted Christ after prayer, Bible studies, personal testimonies of many. Smiled with clear eyes for the first time anyone could remember.
My siblings and I getting sick every week my dad was to preach. When we noticed, we began to pray against it. Kept happening so we asked others to pray as well. The first Sunday we were able to go together we celebrated by going out to eat together as if it were a holiday. God was glorified as we were brought closer together in unity.
How do we fear no evil?

Ephesians 6:10-20

Put on! Do not wait to respond, prepare instead

Don't run. There is no protection for your back and Satan runs faster than you do

Isaiah 54:17
No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,
and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord
and their vindication[a] from me, declares the Lord.”

Guarding Ourselves

The false mentality that seems to exist is that the higher we climb on the leadership ladder the less temptation we will face.

David
Elijah

We face this every single day if we are living for Christ

Romans 8:31-39
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?... Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I encourage you to walk around campus and pray for the buildings and faculty and professors and students.
