PRESENTATION OUTLINE
What is it?
Retinitis pigmentosa is the collective name of a group of eye diseases that affect the retina.
What does it do?
One of the most common effects is the breakdown of rods (cells that detect dim light) and cones (cells that detect light and colour.)
This cause your eyes not to adjust to darkness. Over time it also results in tunnel vision.
What genes does it affect?
Retinitis pigmentosa affects several different genes not just one. The genes it effects are on the X chromosome.
Can it be cured?
Retinitis pigmentosa cannot be cured but vitamin A can be used to slow the process.
