Tips

for Parents of Intense Children

A common characteristic of gifted and talented children is emotional sensitivity.

This particular characteristic often makes it difficult for a gifted child to function in the world - more so at school than the home.

Untitled Slide

  • Gifted children learn to mask their emotions.
  • They do this to protect themselves from ridicule.
  • They do so to protect others.
  • Empower the gifted to act respectfully, yet preserve his/her deep feelings.
  • The gifted child's sensitivity is crucial for their capacity to act ethically and passionately — and to fully realize their gifts.

Teach the gifted child to find outlets for their sensitivity.

Untitled Slide

  • Expose them to Nature, animals, kindred spirits, and contemplation.
  • Provide some freedom to exercise their imaginations.
  • Provide safe, unstructured time
  • Teach them to anticipate physical and emotional responses and to prepare for them
  • Develop a feelings vocabulary

Cherish and celebrate diversity and individual differences. "Think about how these traits effect a person's perception of the world- perhaps through a kaleidoscopic lens".
