INDO-GANGETIC PLAIN

  • A.k.a Indus Ganga and North Indian Rivers plain
  • Most fertile and productive plain in South Asia
  • Irrigated by the Indus, Ganges and Brahamaputra river
  • Passes through Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh
  • 255 million hectares

INDUS RIVER

  • One of the longest rivers in Asia

  • Crosses the Himalayas and the Karakoram Mountain Range.
  • Starts at the Mansarovar Lake at the Tibetan Plateau
  • Pakistan gets most of its water supply from here.
  • Is a source of several other rivers.

GANGES RIVER

  • Flows along the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal
  • Holy site for the Hindus and bathing in it was a ritual
  • Flows through India and Bangladesh
  • Is mentioned in the Mahabharata, an epic
  • A holy place in Hindu mythology/ Hinduism
  • 1560 mi (2510 km)
  • Flows through the Indo-Gangetic plain
  • Source of life for different civilizations throughout history

BRAHAMAPUTRA RIVER

  • A.k.a Tsangpo-Brahamaputra
  • 1800 mi (2900km)
  • Crosses the Himalayas, Tibet, China, and India
  • Joins with the Ganges River.
  • Its lower course is sacred to the Hindus
  • Heavily used for transporting agricultural products
