THE JOURNEY OF ODYSSEUS

by KAREN McGEE and LEAH ZEIMET

TROY
Odysseus helps the Greeks win the Trojan War with his secret weapon: the Trojan Horse.

ISMARUS
When in Ismarus fighting the Cicones, Odysseus loses 72 men.

LOTUS EATERS
The Land of the Lotus Eaters was a drug den where 3 members of Odysseus's crew ate the lotus and had to be physically pulled back onto the ship.

CYCLOPES' LAND

  • Odysseus and his men defeat the Cyclops by getting him drunk and blind him by stabbing the Cyclops in the eye.
  • While he was blind, Odysseus and his men hide under the sheep and were able to escape the cave when the Cyclops let his sheep out.

AEOLIA
Aeolus, keeper of the winds, gives Odysseus a bag of the strongest winds, but warns Odysseus to be careful when opening it. His men were curious about what the gift was, so they opened it. As a result, the winds blew them off course to Aeolia.

THE CITY OF TELEPYLUS

  • The last Laestrygonians were giants who destroyed all of the Ithacan fleet except for Odysseus's ship.
  • They ate and killed the men on the other 11 ships.

THE ISPAND OF AEAEA

  • The Island of Aeaea was guarded by men who had been transformed into animals by Circe, the daughter of Helios and ruler of the island.
  • When Odysseus reaches Aeaea, Circe turns his entire crew into swines but he is immune to it.
  • She then tells Odysseus to go to the underworld in order to speak with Tiresias.

LAND OF THE DEAD
At the underworld, Odysseus goes to speak to Tiresias, the blind prophet. Tiresias tells him that he cannot eat the Cattle of the Sun god if he wants to safely return home to Ithaca.
Tiresias also tells Odysseus that his wife has many suitors back home, and the men who like Penelope have eaten all of his food.

THE SIRENS

  • The Sirens sing a song in an attempt to lure sailors.
  • However, Odysseus was warned of this and pours wax in the ears of his remaining crew members.

SCYLLA AND CHARYBDIS

  • Before Odysseus arrived here, Circe advised him that going near Sylla would kill 6 of his men and traveling by Charybdis would destroy his entire ship.
  • He is also advised not to try and fight Scylla for he'd end up losing 12 men instead of 6.
  • In the end, he sails by Scylla and loses 6 members of his crew.

CATTLE OF THE SON GOD

  • They were on the Island of Thrinacia, where the sun God, Helios, left his cattle.
  • When Odysseus went to pray, his crew ate the cattle .
  • Helios was furious and told Zeus that Odysseus's men should be punished.
  • The next day, Zeus created a violent storm and the ship sailed towards Charybdis.
  • Odysseus was the only survivor as he held on to a broken piece of his ship.

OGYGIA

  • Odysseus lived with Calypso as her lover for 7 years.
  • Calypso wanted to marry Odysseus but he was determined to return home, so he built a ship and continued his journey home.

PHAEACIA

  • Odysseus meets Alcinious, King of the Phaecians, and tells him the story about his journey.
  • After hearing his story, the Phaecians gladly give Odysseus a ride home to Ithaca on one of their magical ships.

ITHACA

  • When Odysseus returns home, he sees his son, Telemachus, for the first time in 15 years.
  • Together, they kill all of the suitors.
  • Then, Odysseus takes back his throne as king of Ithaca and reigns alongside his beloved wife, Penelope.
