MAYAN CULTURE AND HISTORY

  • Then: Yucatan, Peninsula 2,000 B.C.
  • Now (Ending): The city-states of the Maya were slowly conquered by Spain. These major cities fell in the 17th century.

Government

  • The Mayan Government came from the ancient manuscript called Chilam Balam.
  • The Triple Alliance (Yucatan Peninsula Government) consists of the three most important cities in the Mayan realms.

Food

  • They mainly eat fruits & veggies such as: Anona, Mamey, Pitahaya, Saramuya, Chicozapote, Nance.
  • They did and still eat meals like: corn/maize, black beans, squash, avocado, pumpkin, and sometimes mango.

Clothing

  • The Mayan clothing wear is/was never made to fit close to ones body, but rather held up by knots or by belts that they would wear alone with the outfit.
  • The Men and Women often wore head wear such as Men: wore head dresses and Women: wore hairstyles that involved intertwining.

Art

  • Early Mayan artists were mainly into drawing/painting religious artwork.
  • The artist told stories with the artwork they would create and expressed what they were feeling through their work.

  • One big ancient civilization in five different countries/they were a bunch of different tribes all over Mesoamerica.
  • The Mayan are almost 4,000 years old/the Aztec are more recent with their culture.

  • The Mayans use the method of slash and burn farming./the Aztecs use the chinampas which is a floating garden for farming.

  • They have a calendar based on the suns movement.
  • They have their own written language in hyrogliphics.
  • They have a deity know as the feathered serpent, which the Mayans call it Quetzalcoat.

  • The Mayan came up with a calendar based on astronomy.
  • The calendar goes off of the suns rotations throughout the year.

  • The Mayan culture used a number system based on 20 originally made by counting on fingers & toes. The numbers were made up of only three symbols: zero which was a circle; one was a dot; five looks like a bar.
  • Numbers 19 & up were written in a kind of vertical place value format using powers of 20, 400, 8000, ect.

Farming

  • Farming was done by men. Corn was one main food of the people. Mayas were the first civilization to make cacao plant and used to make chocolate drink from cacao beans. Agriculture was carried on permanently grown fields and forest gardens. Other methods included terracing, wild harvesting, slash and burn.

WHere they are today

  • Today there are about six million Mayan people. Mayans largest groups are mostly located in Mexico, the most important of these being the Yucatan, the Tzotzil, and the Tzeltal. All 31 Maya groups speak a mutually unintelligible language.

  • Was there so many symbols in their language that some had to look alike? If so, how did they keep track of all of them and not get confused.
