CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD FIRST AIDER

  • Gentle (should not cause pain)
  • Resourceful (should make best use of things)
  • Observant (should notice all sign)
  • Tactful (should not alarm the victim)
  • Emphatic (should be comforting )
  • Respectable (should maintain a professional & caring attitude)

EMERGENCY ACTION PRINCIPLES

  • Survey the Scene (answer this questions first)
  • Is the scene safe?
  • What happened?
  • How many people are injured?
  • Are there bystanders who can help?
  • Identify yourself as a trained CPR provider
  • Get consent to give care
  • Check for consciousness

ACTIVATE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

  • Depending on the situation
  • Call First and Care First
  • A bystanders should make the telephone call for help (if available)
  • Somebody will be asked to arrange for transfer facility

ACTIVATE MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

  • Information to be remembered in activating medical assistance
  • What happened?
  • Location?
  • Number of person injured?
  • Extent of injury and first aid given?
  • The telephone number from where you are calling?
  • Person who activated medical assistance must identify onself and drop the phone last

DO A PRIMARY SURVEY

  • Chech for Airway
  • Head Tilt-Chin Lift Maneuver (w/o fracture)
  • Jaw-Thrust Maneuver (injured)
  • Check for Breathing (look, listen, feel)
  • Check for Circulation (check pulse)

DO A SECONDARY SURVEY

  • Interview the Victim
  • Check Vital Signs
  • Perform Head-to-Toe examination

VITAL SIGNS

  • Pulse Rate (beats/minute)
  • Adult 60-90
  • Child 80-100
  • Infant 100-120
  • Respiration Rate (breath/minute
  • Adult 12-20
  • Child 18-25
  • Infant 25-35
