Southwest
Is the region of the US that borders Mexico.
Exploration and settlement
Spanish explorers were looking for gold in the US. They thought it would be on the native Americans roof.
Corn and Indian triad
Some of the southwest native Americans lived in permanent villages whee they grew corn, beans, squash, potatoes and chilies.
Chilies
A food that Columbus took back from Mexico called chilies. Chilies are for real hot peppers.
Piñon nuts
They adapted this food of the native Americans to make wonderful pastries. Piñon nuts are found in pine cones.
Arrival of animals
They would eat cattle, sheep, rabbit, turkey, pigs, chickens, goats, horses, and dried beef is what they hunted and ate a lot.
Fry bread and sopapillas
Spaniards brought this food to the Indians. These foods are delicious and filled with honey.
Rice and wheat
They were brought by the Spanish. Wheat grew in Sonora, the northern part of Mexico. So it spread.
Tortillas
Tortilla actually means little cake. Their made from dried corn kernels and cooked in a solution of lime and water.
Frijoles
Their beans usually red , Black, and pinto. Mexicans often eat some type of beans 3 times a day.
Tamales
Mexicans use corn to make tamales which is a very popular use of corn to make tamales. A dried cornhusk is softened in water. A cornmeal mixture is then spread inside that that is stopped with well seasoned pork or chicken mixture.
Avocado
It is sometimes called alligator pear. It's a fruit rough dark green to purplish skin and a pale mislay flavored flesh.
Chocolate
It is made from cocoa bean native to Mexico.it is one of the favorited Mexican beverages.
Prickly pear
The cactus fruit. Are very sweet and can be eaten raw.
Tex-mex
Ranchers who migrated from the south brought their foods such as hot breads and chicken fried steak with them.
Cowboys and chuck wagons: all of the foods they ate during long summer drives were stored in chuck wagons. Food was kept in a rolling kitchen.
Bowl of red and fajitas
Real chili con carne is made with small cubes of meat that are simmered with ancho chilies until the meat falls apart.
Southern California
Although the Spanish came early to what is now called California, the southwestern influence is much lighter.
