SCARLET FEVER

Scarlet Fever is a disease that usually occurs in children and adolescents especially between ages 2-10(adults can get it too). It Is caused by the same germ as
strep throat. Scarlet fever was untreatable until antibiotics were invented in the early 19-40's. The body parts involved are the throat, tonsils, skin and tongue. If you have Scarlet Fever it is important to drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest.

What Causes Scarlet Fever?
Scarlet Fever is caused by Streptococcal (strep) infection the same thing that causes strep throat, the infection is caused by a germ that produces Scarlet Fever Toxin (poison).

Is Scarlet Fever Contagious? How Is It Spread?
Yes, Scarlet Fever is Highly contagious. It is spread by direct contact with an infected person, breathing in the germs through the air, or touching an object that has the germ on it.

SYMPTOMS OF SCARLET FEVER

  • High fever, swollen tonsils
  • Sore throat, cough
  • Vomiting
  • Red rash
  • Flushed face

What are the Effects of Scarlet Fever?
Short term: After the rash of scarlet fever fades the skin peels this goes on for about 10-14 days
Long term: If not treated, scarlet fever can lead to complications like kidney problems and rheumatic fever, affecting the joints, heart and other organs.

How do You Cure Scarlet Fever?
Scarlet Fever is Cured with antibiotics, after starting the symptoms may go away in a few days, if so you have to finish out all of the doses to prevent long term damage.

How can You Prevent Scarlet Fever?
Scarlet Fever can not be completely prevented, because some people can carry the step germ without becoming sick. You can help prevent it by doing your best to avoid people with strep throat or scarlet fever, but nobody is perfect and if you do end up with scarlet fever or strep throat it can be easily treated with antibiotics.
