WHAT IS PBL?

PBL or Project Based Learning is a collaborative way of learning. It consists of creating and completing projects and assignments with a source of technology, that is accessible for teachers and students. (Ex: iPad, iPhone, computers, etc.)

PBL benefits students differently compared to a standard textbook. PBL allows an easier way for students in the 21st century to have a greater depth of understanding towards concepts, broader knowledge base, improved communication and interpersonal/social skills, enhanced leadership skills, creativity, and improved writing skills.

Pt.2
Not only does PBL help improve certain skills for students, it allows students to work together to solve real-world problems in their schools and communities. Being in a group not only means working on a project and solving problems, but it also means that students would have to interact, communicate, and step outside of their comfort zones, in order to work with other students and complete a task.

Now, you must be asking from a teachers point of view, " What if some students don't pull their own weight for an assignment/project?"

SIMPLE STEPS FOR SOLVING A GROUP PROBLEM

  • As a teacher, you want to let the group leader and group members solve the problem on his/her own
  • If the problem continues to get out of hand, give the student that is not participating 3 chances/strikes
  • If the 3 strikes run out, the student will be withdrawn from the group and put on his own
  • Now for the last straw, if the student continues to misbehave, the student will automatically be given a referral/detention

JOHN DEWEY(1897):
"Learning is doing"
PBL refocuses eduction on the student, not the curriculum--- a shift mandated by the global world,which rewards them with assets such as drive, passion, creativity, empathy, and resilience. These things cannot be taught out of a textbook, but must be activated through experience and that's what PBL is all about.

PBL is the pathway for students and the knowledge they will receive. PBL prepares and educates students AND teachers for the future.
