ANTIPATHY

  • (N.) a strong dislike, hostile feeling
  • Synonyms- hostility, enmity, aversion, bad blood
  • Antonyms- attraction, appeal, allure, sympathy
  • Failing to endorse is not the same as expressing antipathy.

APPLICABLE

  • (Adj.) capable of being applied; relevant, suitable
  • Synonyms- appropriate, fit, apt, apposite
  • Antonyms- inappropriate, unsuitable, irrelevant
  • Although she focuses on women, much of what she says is equally applicable to men.

ASSET

  • (N.) Something of value; a resource; an advantage
  • Synonyms- property, possession, holding, endowment
  • Antonyms- drawback, handicap, liability
  • Mental flexibility is a great asset in solving crosswords.

BESET

  • (V.) to attack from all sides; to surround, hem in
  • (Adj.) harassed, troubled; studded
  • Synonyms- assail, badger, pester, torment
  • The lights have beset by bugs every since we first got them.

  • (N.) compulsion by threat; forcible confinement
  • Synonyms- intimidation, coercion
  • Antonyms- persuasion, coaxing, sweet talk, cajolery

  • Synonyms- tiny, minuscule
  • Antonyms- vast, immense, huge, infinite

  • Synonyms- feeble, impotent, unobjectionable, insipid
  • Antonyms- harmful, dangerous, pernicious, toxic, virulent

  • Synonyms- counter, oppose, work against

  • (V.) to arrange or obtain such rights
  • (Adj.) plain, open to view; copyrighted
  • Synonyms- exclusive license, evident
  • Antonyms- concealed, hidden, secret
  • He took out a patent on the idea and started exploring uses for his invention.

  • (N.) Distinguished bravery; superior skill or ability
  • Synonyms- valor, courage, heroism, mastery, proficiency
  • Antonyms- cowardice, incompetence, ineptitude
  • The color may also be linked to prowess in human athletes.

  • (V.) to administer a tranquilizer
  • Synonyms- unruffled, composed, cool and collected
  • Antonyms- loud, brash, flashy, flamboyant, garish, flighty

STENTORIAN

  • (Adj.) extremely loud
  • Synonyms- thundering, deafening, earsplitting
