PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TO WHAT EXTENT IS COLOR A PART OF MIND-INDEPENDENT REALITY?

Emily Turner

IN TERMS OF NATURAL SCIENCES

VISIBLE LIGHT

  • When light hits an object, some is reflected and some is absorbed
  • This depends on the properties of the object
  • The waves that are reflected are then processed by cones in the eye
  • Cones are a type of photoreceptor in the retina that respond to light
  • Humans can see wavelengths of approximately 400-800 nanometers

ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT

  • Humans have 3 cone types, while some animals have four
  • This allows them to see ultraviolet light
  • Ultraviolet colors are present but we cannot see them

Untitled Slide

  • If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and no one is around to hear it,
  • Does it make a sound?
  • If an apple is reflecting light and no one is around to see it,
  • Is it still red?

HYPOTHETICALLY...

  • Say a flower is ultraviolet in color, but we see it as red
  • Is the flower ultraviolet or red?
  • Can we say that an object has color without our brains processing it?

IN TERMS OF THE ARTS

Untitled Slide

  • In art, color is used to show images and portray messages
  • Without the cones in our eyes,
  • we would be looking at a blank page

COLOR AND EMOTION

ADVANTAGES/LIMITATIONS

  • Different colors provoke different emotions
  • This can be both an advantage and a limitation
  • in terms of understanding color

RED

  • Red is associated with war, blood, danger, strength, and power
  • It is also associated with passion, desire, and love
  • These are almost opposite things
  • Creates an ambiguity in our understanding of red

BLACK

  • Black is associated with death, evil, and mystery
  • The use of black in the Halloweekends logo reinforces that
  • this is a scary event

COLOR AND SENSORY PERCEPTION

LIMITATIONS

  • Color is only visible
  • It can't be detected by any other sense
  • Those who are color blind perceive color differently

ADVANTAGES

  • Color could not be understood without sensory perception

SOCIAL MEDIA

  • Social media sites use the color blue
  • Such as Facebook, twitter, and tumblr
  • Blue promotes trust and loyalty
