PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MATH

MUST HAVES...

1. Real Life

All math classes need to include real life math

Students need to see that math is all around them. They need to see it embedded into everything that they do. They need this because it makes it relevant and when something is relevant,
the learning is deeper.

2. Problem Solving

With and without support.

Problem solving is important because it takes the learning of basic understanding of concept and get the students to think about the actual math. Solving problems is not a formula and problem solving has a billion different ways to a solution. Students need to aquire the skills to seek out the solutions because the answers are are just as unique as their learners.

3. Feedback

Students need to see where they need to grow...

Through feedback, students get..

  • Affirmation that they can do math.
  • Clarification for the concepts that they need.
  • Direction on how to use and apply the math
  • Misconceptions happen so lets cottect them
  • Affirmation once again

4. Room for failure

Misconceptions help us learn - more so that sucess

Students need to fail
Students are so afraid to be wrong and because of this they lack the ability to persevere when they are wrong. It is through failure that they learn to pick themselves back up and push through. When students learn to triumph over a challenge they begin to see that failure can teach them. Our students need to do this more and get that opportunity from not being right the first time.
Students learn more from figuring out what the misconceptions are than they do from being right. Often those that are right, know that they are right, however have a hard time defending why.

5. Time for reteaching

Teachers need to slow down when the studnets need it

Learning does not end after failure.
Teachers need to remember that they have the right to slow down when their students need them to. Doing this allows for reteaching because realistically it doesn't matter when the students learn it, it matters that they do learn.
