  • Prisoners were enslaved
  • Freemen were rewarded with land

BATTLE OF HASTINGS

  • Fought on Senlae Hill
  • KIng Harold II was defeated by William the Conqueror
  • Harold was shot and killed in this war
  • William became 1st Norman King of England

WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

  • 1st Norman king of England
  • Early on known as "William the Bastard"
  • Wasn't crowned king in 1066,so he fled to England
  • Spent end of his reign fighting Philip I

VIKINGS

  • Referred to as "The Danes" by the English
  • Most were Swedish or Norwegian
  • 793 was the first recorded viking attack at Lindisfrane

  • People who lived on the land from the British Isles to Gallatia
  • Isn't much documnation about the Celts
  • 1st recorded encounter was 400bc
  • 6 different celt languages

OFFA

  • Known as King of Merica
  • By the end if his reign offa was the master of all of england south of the humber
  • Built a barrier that ran 149 miles between Merica and Welsh kimgdoms

AETHELBERT

  • Son of Aethelwut and Osburh
  • Became king of Wessex in 1860
  • Succeded by his brother Aethelred

DANELAW

  • Northeastern region of Anglo Saxon England

ALFRED THE GREAT

  • Born in Wantage Beekshire
  • Became king in 871
  • Founded first English Army
  • Defended England against Danish Invasion

EDWARD THE CONFESSOR

  • Knows as "the confessor" because of his deep piety
  • Raided exile in Normady
  • Last king of Wessex

Monsters were a huge belief in the anglo saxon Era, some of the main mosters are Draugr, Trolls, Ketta, Ogres, Giants, and Elves.

Huge buildings over a 160 ft tall. People gathered to drink mead, recieve gifts, and challenged eachother to do great deeds, played a big part of thr Anglo-Saxon Era

ANGLO SAXON SOCIETY

  • Earl - royal governor
  • Coerl - free man worth 1/6 military service
  • Gebur - worked unpaid for his lord slaves
  • Cotsetla - free men who own their own land

THE STATUS OF WOMEN

  • Almost equal to males in this era
  • Jobs such as bakers,weavers,and singers

ANGLO SAXON ART AND CULTURE

  • Illuminated manuscripts - religious manuscripts decorated with gold of silver
  • Lindisfarne Gospels - illuminated manuscript gospel booked produced around the year 700
  • Anglo-Saxon Chronicle - earliest known history of England written in the English language.
  • Runes - alphabet extended from the Elder Futhark

GOLDEN AGE OF NORTHUMBRIA

  • Mid seventh century to mid eighth century when Northumbria was

IMPORTANT PEOPLE

  • Caedmon - earliest known English poet
  • Venerable Bede - known as the greatest of all Anglo-Saxon scholars
  • Cynewulf - one of the twelve Anglo-Saxon poets known by name
