The setting of the Scarlet Letter was created during 17th century at a colony of New England in North America, which is present-day Massachusetts. It's related to the hometown of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the story was happened not far before his time period. The novel of the Scarlet Letter reflects his experiences and family in someway.(One of his ancestor was a judge who led Nathaniel to change his last name.)

Nathaniel was born in the family of former New England political leader's family. He born in the early 19th century in Massachusetts. He is interested in writing novels or allegories about moral issues. As a famous writer of America, he became one of the most famous in the Dark Romanticism.

"Renounce resentment, and avoid the self-destructive effects of renew a relationship"

According to the book Between Vengeance and Forgiveness, Matha Minow claimed that justice is the one that is able to bring all what those criminals deserve to them and help the world run in order with rules and laws. Forgiveness is a word much talked by those people who have religious beliefs. It helps people to "renounce resentment, and avoid the self-destructive effects of renew a relationship". The idea of forgiveness provides a limitation for justice and prevent it from becoming vengeance.

The structure of the novel: the structure of the novel is the main thing that I would like to focus on for the Scarlet Letter. I am curious about the specific way that Nathaniel Hawthorne build the story on purpose for the entire novel to move on smoothly and attract readers step by step. Also, I want to focus on how did the author build the structure of the novel so that sense of forgiveness is tied with the idea of justice.
