The Evolution of Cheerleading Presentation

Cheerleading started in the 1880's. It was called a "pep club" and was just for MALES.

"Pep clubs" became very popular in the university of Minnesota. In the 1890's they started started using megaphones to yell chants like, "Rah, Rah! Ski-U-Mah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Minn-e-so-ta!

Women weren't allowed to cheer at the University of Minnesota untill 1923.

Females couldn't join university cheer clubs in large numbers untill the 1940's because at that time many men were going off to fight in the war.

In 1948 a man named Lawrence Herkimer held the first summer cheer clinic and there he developed a cheer jump called a "Herkie". He also created pom poms and the spirit stick.

By the 1960's cheerleading could be found in almost every school.

In 1974 a man named Jeff Webb founded a Universal Cheer Association (UCA), which taught cheerleaders higher level skills.

ALL-STAR cheerleading started in the late 1980's and grew quickly through the 1990's.

Science and Math Before: Cheer started off just working a males vocal cords and no real math was used.

Science and Math Now: Now cheer works A LOT of the muscles in the human body. Math is also used alot in routines.
