Slide Notes

Have you ever wished you’d had better notes during an online exam?

Because we are an online school, many students assume they can access the material later digitally, and do not bother to take notes. Many confess that if anything, they just copy the information from the lesson into a Google Doc.

This is NOT effective. While your laptop can be an excellent and active tool in your learning, it is important to take notes externally as well.

The ART of note-taking

And other great techniques to help you succeed.

What Works? The resarch says:

  • Space out your learning
  • Practice (quiz yourself!)
  • Develop your OWN effective note-taking technique
Decades of research showed that doing these two things will yield the best shot at retaining the information we learn.

Why else might working in only one class at a time be a bad idea?

We need exposure to material at regular intervals.

Certain note-taking techniques fared well with the researchers, too, however...

What techniques are you currently using?

Traditional methods like Cornell notes still have their place!

Remember, when taking pen to paper:

Always LABEL your notes (include lesson #)

Do them in order

Keep it simple

Sketchnoting and mind mapping

A colorful approach to organizing information
When experimenting with the more creative approaches, follow these rules:

Organize your ideas first!
The art will follow.

Remember to organize around a central concept, with many branches.

Structure the information in a way that makes sense to you.

Replace words with symbols.

Create your own code!!

What are the three things the author emphasizes?

TEXT (choose what is important), PICTURES/ART (this can be simple, or elaborate if you are skilled like the author), and STRUCTURE (how does the information flow?).
