What is Poetry?

• Poetry is learning and experimenting together
• Poetry is laughter
• Poetry is music
• Poetry can be unified performance

What is Poetry?

• Poetry is stories
• Poetry is more interesting, more impactful learning
• Poetry is seen as well as heard
• Poetry is shared experience and appreciation

Criteria for Children's Poetry

• A fresh or original view of the subject is presented
• Insight or emotion is shown or felt
• Poetic devices are used effectively
• Language is used effectively
• The voice or persona of the poem appears to be sincere

Poetry Building

• Anthologies- feature different topics with pultiple poets
• Collections- complie peoms about a particular topic written by different poets

Poetry Building

• Single-Poem Picture Books- draw children in and enhance their understand with striking illustrations for more traditional poems
• Verse Novels- present traditionally prose genres in poetic form

Children spontaneously love the exuberance and humor of limericks and light verse, and these can be good strategies for leading into some of the higher quality and more sophisticated forms of poetry.
