HISTORY OF HANDBALL

  • Handball was created in the 19th century
  • Was first played in Europe primarily in Denmark, Germany. Norway, and Sweden
  • The first rule book was published in 1917
  • The first international game was played in 1925 between Germany and Belgium
  • Men's handball was added to the 1936 Olympics
  • Women's handball was added to the 1972 Olympics

HANDBALL RULES

  • There are two teams with 7 players (including goalkeeper)
  • When they player receives the ball they have the option to keep it, pass it, or shoot it
  • If you possess it you can dribble it like a basketball or you can take three steps
  • They play two periods with 30 minutes
  • Each team gets one timeout per period

TYPE OF BALL USED

  • The ball is spherical
  • It must either be made of leather or synthetic material
  • The ball is intended to be used by a single hand
  • It's size varies depending on age and gender
  • Some players use resin a product that helps them manipulate the ball better but is sometimes prohibited

HANDBALL COURT

  • Handball can either be played on an indoor or outdoor court
  • It is played on a court 40 by 20 meters with a goal in the center of each end
  • With a goal in the center of each end
  • When played outdoors it is played in a grassy area or a beach
