WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

  • Depression is a mood disorder causing feelings of sadness and loss of interest

  • Depression may be caused by a chemical imbalance or a tragic life event

COMMON SYMTOMS

  • Depression has many different effects on everyone
  • Depression may effect mood, sleep, emotions,weight, and someone's mind.

HOW IT EFFECTS MOOD

  • Depression causes many different moods such as: anxiety, hopelessness, guilt, inability to feel pleasure, loss of interest, mood swings, and sadness.

SLEEP

  • Depression may affect sleep.
  • Sleep can range from insomnia to excessive sleeping.

EMOTIONS

  • Someone may experience excessive crying, agitation, irritability,and social isolation.

BODY

  • Weight- weight loss and weight gain
  • Body- excessive hunger, fatigue, loss of appetite, or restlessness

WHAT TYPES OF DEPRESSION

  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD)- A depressed mood that lasts for at least 2 years
  • Perinatal Depression- many women experience this after giving child birth. Also known as postpartum depression.
  • Psychotic Depression- happens when a person with severe depression plus some form of psychosis- fixed beliefs, hearing or seeing things, etc.

WHO CAN GET DEPRESSION

  • Anyone can get depression at any age.
  • 20% of teens have depression
  • The most common age group that is effected by depression is 20-40
  • Least common is 65 and up

MIND

  • Depression can cause suicidal thoughts. Many people who have suicidal thoughts don't seek help and often go through with suicide

DEPRESSION IN FAMILIES

  • If someone in a family has depression they should be included and encouraged to get involved in things to occupy their time.
  • Families should listen to the person/ people that is depressed and take them seriously. They shouldn't be made fun of or put down.

DEPRESSION IN FAMILIES

  • Families can educate themselves and learn how to work through this family challenge.
  • Family should encourage the person to get professional help.
  • Family should support the person and be there for them no matter what.
