Disinhibition

violent media changes our usual standards of what is acceptable, legitimise the use of violence, ST -> arousal, LT- acceptable

Priming

increase in accessibility of aggressive thoughts following media exposure, Zell-hostile attributions, increasing aggression

Research support for desensitisation

Carnagey, video games reduced physiological arousal, pps had lower HR and skin conductance when watching 10 min clip of real life violence

Disinhibition less likely when violence has negative consequences

Goranson, boxing match, 1 match boxer died, less likely to act in violent manner

Research support for cognitive priming

Bushman, pps who watched a violent film had faster reaction times to aggressive words than those who watched a non-violent film

Disinhibition depends on other factors

Collins- young children more likely to be affected and less likely to consider consequences

Desensitisation maladaptive and adaptive depending on individual

Busman&Anderson, desensitisation to violent media reduces helping, good for soliders
