CHILDHOOD

  • Eisenhower was born on October 14,1890 in Denison Texas
  • His Dad, David Eisenhower and his family lived in Kansas before Dwight Eisenhower was born, but they moved back to Kansas when Eisenhower was a year and a half
  • David Eisenhower had a General store in Kansas
  • Dwight Eisenhower was born with 6 brothers
  • He had a childhood dog named Flip
  • When Eisenhower was 4 years old his brother Paul died of Diphtheria when he was 10 months old.

WWII

  • Eisenhower was transferred to Fort Sam Houston
  • Later, he was promoted to Brigadier General.
  • He trained drafted men in WWII
  • He was then promoted to Major General
  • In a few months he became commander in chief for Operation Torch
  • In 1942 he was transferred to the War Plans Division.

D-DAY

  • Eisenhower was chosen to be Supreme Allied Commander of D-Day
  • There was 160,000 Allied troops
  • Eisenhower said if the mission failed he would take full responsibility.
  • Largest Amphibious invasion in history
  • Because of Bad weather Eisenhower decided to postpone one day.
  • More than 6,000 Americans, 2,700 British, and 1,000 Canadians Died

PRESIDENCY

  • He ran for President in 1952
  • He is a republican
  • During his presidency he tried to reduce Cold War tensions
  • He brought peace with South Korea with his "Atoms for Peace" Speech
  • In 1956 he was reelected for a second term
  • In 1957 he focused on the Civil Rights Movement

AFTER PRESIDENCY

  • He retired in Gettysburg
  • He kept an office at Gettysburg for the remainder of his life
  • Eisenhower died March 28, 1969
  • He had his funeral in Abilene, Kansas

  • He had his face on the dollar coin from 1971 to 1978
  • He never did active combat
  • His first son died at the age of three
  • He was a painter
  • He was President of Columbia University
  • He was the first president to ride in a helicopter
