Shahada

  • To affirm monothesism and believe that there is only one god
  • To believe that Muhammad is the messenger of God
  • One must pronounce Shahada in presence of 2 Muslims in order to become Muslim

Salat

  • To pray 5 times a day: dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and nightfall
  • Ritual washings wudu before praying
  • Able to pray anywhere
  • Fridays: Muslims go to mosque for congregational prayer.
  • Muslims begin prayers with: "Allahu akbar!"

Zakat

  • Qu'ran : the rich should share with the poor (charity)
  • Muslims share 2.5% of wealth
  • The money goes : soup kitchens, public fountains, and etc.
  • Definition = pureness
  • Aids stranded travelers

Siyan

  • During Ramadan to fast
  • Pregnant women, travelers, the sick, the elderly, and young children do not have to fast
  • Emulates encourages generosity, equality, and charity to the Muslim community
  • Ramadan 9th month lunar calendar
  • Fast to show devotion for Allah

Hajj

  • Pilgrimage to Mecca
  • 12th month islamic year
  • Run passage passage between hills as Hagar did
  • Value friendship and equality
  • They circle the Ka'bah 7 times counterclockwise
