IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY

  • What impact does technology have on teaching practice within the Art room?

WAYS TO WORK

  • How do we combine project based learning (PBL) with studio thinking practices and art-based pedagogy? (the main focus of Hunter-Doniger article)

FORMAT OF THE INQUIRY

  • We can use Table 1, page 49 of her article to find what jives and what does not combining PBL with studio thinking and art pedagogy

PROJECT BASED LEARNING

  • 'The educational practice of PBL is strikingly similar to the general pedagogical principles that have always governed the arts classroom' (Hunter-Doniger, 2018, p. 48)

A CHANGE IN OUR APPROACH

  • We no longer accept teaching our subject without regards to other subjects or to the bigger world and-to life.
  • ' Ultimately, arts for arts’ sake means that the arts should be justified only for what the arts can teach and the knowledge and skill sets that can only be developed through an artful experience' (Hunter-Doniger, 2018, p. 48).

A CHANGE IN OUR APPROACH

  • We borrow from technology and recognize ways in which it can honor personal, project-based learning that is supported by online topics research, online museum research and images and sideshows from sources such as Harvard Art Museum's 'Driving Concepts' features that students can follow along with and tie into the classroom teacher's guiding question or to further student inquiry

A CHANGE IN OUR APPROACH

  • We can look at what technique-based tools are available online to help fill in the presence of instruction using tools and concepts when students are working from home or during a study hall period

A CHANGE IN OUR APPROACH

  • Our students can continue to work through their technique utilizing both in-class instruction and online sources (using enlisted examples from previous slides) under the studio thinking habit of 'Craft'

A CHANGE IN OUR APPROACH

  • As educators we can still offer aspects of Artist-based pedagogy and studio thinking through verbal critique and dialoguing about our work and other' works under the studio thinking habit of 'Reflect'

There exists much space to use technology and to choose it wisely while upholding studio thinking and habits for Art Education while preparing them to formulate inquiry among themselves and dialogue with others in the process.
