Matter

Anything that takes up space and has mass.
All matter is made of mass.

Element

Each element is made of only one kind of atom.
There are 120 elements.
Examples: gold, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, iron...

Atom

The smallest unit of chemical element.

Periodic table

A list of all of the chemical elements that exist in the universe.
It categorizes elements according to the prorprties of their atoms.

Molecule

Formed when two or more atoms join together.
These may be 2 of the same atom or 2 different atoms.

Compound

Formed when 2 or more DIFFERENT atoms are joined together.
Note: All compounds are also molecules, but not all molecules are compounds.
Examples of Compounds: CO2 NaCl H2O2
Non Examples - Not compounds: O2 H2

Subscripts

tell you how many “atoms” of each element for that molecule
Example: H2 = 2 atoms hydrogen
Examples: H2O = 2 atoms hydrogen, 1 atom oxygen

Coefficients

multiply the number of molecules you are making!

2 H2O = 4 atoms hydrogen, 2 atoms oxygen
